Abstract

Geotechnical Engineering course provides basic knowledge about soils, as a base for struc-tures; about structural characteristics of soils, the loading process, foundation constructions and de-sign. This discipline is important for potential hydraulic engineers, as the quality of foundations is the main factor of building stability and durability, sometimes the price of foundation can reach up to 50% of building price. Proper selection of foundation type and design of foundation are the main criteria of building durability, strength and cost. Solving of practical tasks has a great importance in studies of subject “Geotechnics”. Shal-low and pile foundations of hydraulic structures are designed by individual tasks, so the theoretical knowledge are applied in practice. During practical works the initial preparation of engineering–geological data is performed and according to obtained results shallow and pile foundations are de-signed and dimensions of foundations are estimated.
